In a Frontline of California Wildfires
Our member Susan Redmond went last week of October 2007 to San Diego, CA with ARC rescue mission to help victims of devastating fire go back on their feet. Susan is sending E-mails to us whenever she got a chance, and we decided to publish parts of them as her Frontline Diary with her permission.

Never know when I'll get a chance to connect with home. Hope the Lions meeting went well. Some people had only seconds to get out of their homes - lots of pets lost. Some people still living in their cars but we are getting to them. I dislike driving in the dark to get back to my motel. Yes, I am now out of a shelter and now have a bed.

Getting very little sleep and then having those 3 hours difference in time. For some people being burned out of one's home is only one of many problems. After helping them I have held many while they cried. There are volunteers from every state. My roommate is from
Michigan . I had one lady today with 3 little girls whose house burned down etc. who was just diagnosed with MS. I was able to be more helpful because of the bike fundraisers and the contacts that I have made. .... There is so much good work that is being done but so much more to be done.

I am so fornatunate to be working with such nice people. A couple from NJ--He is a retired firefighter from the N.Y. company that suffered a total loss on 9/11.There is constant change here. One couple came in today. They had a manatory evacuation and just came home to find out that their house was completely burned down. One lady didn't think that she was in danger until a neighbor come running over to get her out with seconds to spare before her house house went up suddenly in flames with her pets etc. A lot of sad stories. It looks like I will be here at least until the 14th.

Yesterday, I used the computer at the hotel and it gave error messages after I typed a long message--Oh well. Things are starting to wind down. Other have been let go but they wnat me to stay until the end. I changed my mind and told them I wanted to go home by Nov. 14th. There have been over 500 thousand evacuated in San Diego---the largest in
US history. Many are sleeping in their cars or are tenting on their property. Yesterday a 88 year old who was sleeping in her car came in because she was hungry. We gave her some food and some loaded credit cards but she refused motel. She was living in a trailer but they wouldn't let her back in yet. Also, a lady came in wanting an inhaler which we would provide but when I listened to her chest she had pneumonia . I got her in to see a doctor. A lot of people whose house didn't burn down have a bunch of ashes and smoke to contend with. Many have respiratory conditions. I have newspaper clippings but I have been here in the assistance center seeing people who are sick. Sometimes I get to go out with a home visiting team on other disasters and do get some pictures. Actually the Red Cross frowns on picture taking.

Yesterday I sent you a large email but I don't think you got it because it came up with an error message when I tried to send it. I think it was because it was too long and I type slow. It is ok to share anything that I send to you. It's slowing up here at the client assistance center. Roads are opening. If people's work places didn't burn they are getting back to work. We still have a lot of services here. The Red Cross has health services, feeding, help with clothing and essential household goods. Salvation Army fills in with money that we can't give them. Others such as IRS,DMV,tax advisors, rebuilding workshops, food stamps are still here. I told them I would like to go home on 11-14. We'll see. Hope things are going ok with you.

Our hero Susan was called to duty once again within one month to help victims of natural disaster. Now Susan is helping victims of disastrous flood in Tahoma, WA area. We just received an E-mail from her with permission to publish it in our Website:

When one come in the beginning of a job there is disorganization but the shelters are set up. Here many of the shelters have been started by church groups then we come in to help. Yesterday, I went out for outreach. In that case, we seek out the homes hardest hit. I was at a mobile home park in Rochester, Wa. They were in tears when they saw us. One of the hardest hit was Lewis county. These people live in a county that has not yet been declared a disaster so they can't get Federal funds. They were pulling out the insulation under their home and the carpet. Some houses smelled pretty bad. They thought that nobody care about them. One lady said that she cried for 3 hr' that morning and got on with it. A lot live by themselves and are elderly. They need vounteer help to lean out their homes. When I got back to headquarters I sent out a feeding truck. We'll go back today.
It's very cold here. Yesterday, I was outside most of the time. I brought my long undereware but forgot my gloves. It's snowing.
Got to go- take care- Susan

Every once in a while I think about Christmas coming. This will be the first time I didn't send a Christmas letter out---maybe after the first of the year.
When I walked into HQ informed me that they were chainning me to a desk to help them out on papperwork which I am not very fond of. Among other things, I had to check on deaths due to the flood. I had to call cornor of the counties, get proof of death faxed to me etc. We visit the family, give them a small amount of money--only $500. I also had to check that everyones paperwork was completed and ok.
Even though it's cold, I hope that I get to go out to visit clients today.
Take care, Susan

Hope everything is ok with you. I know that is a message from you but I was not able to retrive it -- maybe later. I get a different assignment each day. Yesterday was my demise. as a supervisor, I need to also close cases before we leave a job--they want us out by the 19th or 20th. Well, that meant that I was to be in a computer room all day. With my computer phobia, that didn't work too well. So I am out in the field where I like it. I'll have to address my lack of the computer later if I am to stay with the Red Cross.
The rural area is still filled people stressed in feet of mud. They have to use small shovels for the mud in their houses because it is so heavy.
Also it is very contaimated that they have to get new pots and pans because of the disease that learks even if washed. We are doing our best.
Cars are buried in mud. FEMA will only give $28,800 even for a farm that is worth at least $400,000 to $500,000 and has been in the family for generations. Of course , I have ruined my shoes from the mud. Most of these people are proud and very hard workers. There was a very big tractor replacing a bridge to get to a farm. There was an 80yr. old lady driving it.
Instead of outreach to the homes, tomorrow I'll be in a service center where the people come in to us for assistance. At least, it will be warm.
Take care. Susan
